The latest NBC News poll finds that Vice President Kamala Harris has gained remarkable momentum in the 2024 presidential race, posting a double-digit popularity increase, growing enthusiasm for Democrats and an early lead in being seen as the “change” candidate.
A little more than six weeks before Election Day, the poll shows Harris leading former President Donald Trump by 5 points among registered voters, 49% to 44%. While the margin of error means the race remains close, it marks a marked change from the July poll, when Trump had a 2-point lead before President Joe Biden dropped out of the race.
When third-party candidates are included, Harris extends her lead over Trump to 6 points, 47% to 41%.
Harris’ approval rating has risen 16 points since July, representing the biggest improvement of any politician in NBC News polls since George W. Bush’s popularity surged after the Sept. 11 attacks. He is now viewed more favorably than Trump in terms of competence, effectiveness and overall health — qualities that Trump was ahead of when he faced off against Biden.
With an electorate largely dissatisfied with the direction of the country, Harris has emerged as the candidate best placed to represent change and steer the nation in a positive direction.
“In July, there was a stiff headwind headed straight for President Biden and clouding a clear path to victory. Today, the winds have turned in Kamala Harris’ favor,” said pollster Jeff Horwitt of Hart Research Associates, who conducted the survey along with Republican pollster Bill McInturff.
Still, Trump continues to hold advantages on key issues like the economy and inflation, though those leads have shrunk since Biden left. Two-thirds of voters say their family income is not keeping up with the cost of living and rate this issue as their top pre-election concern.
The poll also suggests that some of the decline in Trump’s support comes from Republicans who are not firmly attached to him but could potentially return to his side, as they have done in previous elections.
The new NBC News poll, conducted Sept. 13-17, follows two pivotal months in US politics, which included President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the 2024 race on July 21, two party conventions, the selection of vice presidential candidates, an assassination attempt on Donald Trump in July and another two months later, and the first – and possibly only – debate between Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.
