SpaceX launched its fifth Starship test flight from Texas on Sunday and returned the rocket’s towering first-stage launcher to earth for the first time, achieving a new recovery method involving large metal arms.
The rocket’s Super Heavy first stage launcher lifted off at 7:25 am. CT (1225 GMT) from SpaceX’s launch facility in Boca Chica, Texas, sending the Starship second-stage rocket on a course into space bound for the Indian Ocean west of Australia, where it will attempt an atmospheric reentry and then a water landing.
The Super Heavy launcher, after separating from the Starship launcher at an altitude of about 74 kilometers, returned to the same area from which it was launched to make the landing attempt, with the help of two robotic arms attached to the launch tower.
