Elon Musk joined Donald Trump on stage at a rally as the Republican candidate returned to Butler, Pennsylvania – the town where a gunman attempted to assassinate Trump, prompting Musk to quickly publicly endorse the former president. Trump introduced Musk as “one of the people who will help us build this incredible future,” before the Tesla CEO took the stage wearing a black “Make America Great Again” hat. “I’m not just MAGA, I’m dark MAGA,” Musk told the crowd.
Musk provided an intermission in his speech, with Trump pausing to introduce the entrepreneur at one point. Trump praised him as “a really incredible guy,” adding, “I don’t say that very often. He is a great gentleman.”
“He saved free speech,” Trump claimed. “He created so many different great things.” He referenced both Musk’s Tesla and SpaceX companies and the free speech reference, pointing to Musk’s changes since taking control of X and getting rid of much of the site’s content he moderates.
“Well, first of all, I want to say what an honor it is to be here,” Musk began his remarks to the gathering audience. “And you know, the true test of someone’s character is how they handle themselves under fire. And we had a president who couldn’t walk up a flight of stairs, and another who was pumping his fist after being shot.” He then led the crowd in a chant of “Fight! Fight! Fight!”
“Now, America is the home of the brave and there is no truer test than courage under fire … who do you want to represent America?” Musk asked as the crowd cheered for Trump. “Yes, absolutely. And I think this, this, this election, I think it’s the most important election of our lifetime, it’s – it’s no ordinary election.”
Democrats want to “take away your free speech,” the self-proclaimed free speech advocate argued. “They want to take away your right to bear arms … they want to take away your right to vote, basically.”
While the Harris-Walz campaign supports gun control, there is no indication that the Democratic Party wants to eliminate guns entirely. They have also expressed no interest in eliminating Americans’ free speech or voting rights. It is worth noting that freedom of speech does not mean that there is freedom from the consequences of said speech.
“We have 14 states now that do not require voter ID. California, where I lived, just passed a law banning voter ID for voting. I still can’t believe this is real. So how are you supposed to have good and fair elections if there is no ID?” Musk wondered. “It makes no sense and freedom of speech is the foundation of democracy. And if people don’t know what’s going on, if they don’t know the truth, how can you have an informed vote? You have to have freedom of speech to have democracy. That’s why the First Amendment exists, and the Second Amendment exists to make sure we have the First Amendment.”
Federal law requires newly registered voters in all states to provide their driver’s license number or the last four digits of their Social Security number when they register to vote. There are 15 states in the United States that do not require registered voters to show identification when they come to vote, but voters in those states were required to provide identification when they initially registered.
On September 30, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a law prohibiting local governments from requiring ID to vote. The law is a response to a March 2024 ballot initiative approved by voters in Huntington Beach, where 53.4% of residents voted to require all residents who want to vote to show a valid ID.
The measure in question violated state law, prompting California Attorney General Rob Bonda and Secretary of State Shirley Weber to file a lawsuit to block local officials from enforcing the measure.
“The right to vote freely is the foundation of our democracy, and Huntington Beach’s voter ID policy runs counter to that principle,” Bonta said in a statement. “State election law already contains strong voter ID requirements with strong protections to prevent voter fraud while ensuring that every eligible voter can vote without difficulty. Imposing unnecessary barriers to voter participation disproportionately burdens low-income voters, voters of color, young or elderly voters, and people with disabilities.”
