Britain’s competition regulator said on Friday that Amazon’s (NASDAQ:AMZN) partnership with artificial intelligence (Amazon AI) startup Anthropic will not be referred for further investigation as it does not raise competition concerns.
The Competition and Markets Authority said the deal, which includes Amazon’s $4bn investment in Anthropic, did not qualify for investigation under UK merger regulations.
“We welcome the UK Competition and Markets Authority’s (CMA) decision recognizing the lack of jurisdiction over this partnership,” an Amazon spokesperson said in response to the regulator’s decision.
The regulator has also approved a similar partnership between Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Inflection AI.
However, Alphabet’s ( NASDAQ:GOOGL ) partnership with Anthropic remains under scrutiny.
“Anthropic is an independent company and our strategic partnerships and relationships with investors do not diminish the independence of our corporate governance or our freedom to work with others,” an Anthropic spokesman told Reuters on Friday.
Co-founded by former OpenAI executives and siblings Dario and Daniela Amodei, Anthropic has received billions of dollars in investment from various tech giants.
